Synthetic stucco insulation makes beautiful houses
July 24th, 2008It’s a common truth that most houses that are more than ten years old can benefit from increasing the amount of wall insulation. Generally, many older brick, block or masonry houses are totally deprived from wall insulation. To be honest improved insulation not only lowers utility bills, but also drastically improves indoor comfort year-round. Adding rigid exterior insulation covered with durable synthetic stucco has become an excellent method of updating the exterior appearance.
Contemporary synthetic stucco is available in multiple colors and textures. The entire insulation system is called Exterior Insulation Finish System. Flexible synthetic stucco is usually made from a tough acrylic polymer that is flexible for toughness it at the same time feels hard to the touch just like real stucco. The coloring pigment is mixed with the acrylic, so it goes all the way through the finishing stucco coating. Scratches are not apparent. The many optional textures and appearances are created by mixing various sizes of sand or aggregate.
The advantage of insulating the exterior is that the entire mass of the wall materials and lumber stays at a more constant temperature. This helps to slow indoor temperature changes throughout the day and night. Rigid foam insulation boards are usually just bonded with construction adhesives to the existing house exterior. Some synthetic stucco systems have optional mechanical fasteners for unique application situations. Polyurethane foam board with a higher insulation value is often used. Next goes a strong fiberglass reinforcing mesh that is embedded in a thin layer of base coat of the material over the insulation. This adds strength to the entire synthetic stucco insulation system and creates a smooth base for the finishing stucco coat.
Some manufacturers make their systems that can only be used and applied by professional installers while others can be easily utilized by ordinary to do-it-yourselfers. On the whole, the house exterior is a better location for insulation than interior walls. Besides, no interior floor space is lost as well as indoor mess created.
Another issue is all about the applying job and the proper installing by experts. Do not trust just anybody who calls himself a constructor worker because you might regret it later. If you really care for a good result make sure that a person you are going to hire possesses the necessary skills and qualification.
