Have a large hole in your exterior stucco? We know how to fix it.
July 24th, 2008Experts admit that exterior stucco walls work multi-functionally: they can give an old-style look as well as the look of extreme sophistication and elegance. At the same time, any damage to the stucco texture can end up in serious moisture damage of the house. That’s why it’s extremely essential to eliminate stucco holes and cracks immediately. In most cases, to do the repairs yourself is the least expensive option. Besides, the do-it-yourself project steps of repairing large exterior stucco holes are fairly simple.
Removal: Before starting to repair your exterior stucco walls, you should get rid of the damaged pieces. Knock out all the loose stucco with a chisel and a hammer. Then blow all the excess dust out of the hole. Do not forget to use a layer of wire mesh underneath. In case the wire mesh is damaged in any way, simply staple new piece of mesh right on top of it. Next, make sure the entire area is absolutely clean by spraying it with fresh water.
First stucco layer: When the area is neat and clean it’s high time to apply the first layer of stucco. Use mason’s towel to apply the stucco thoroughly and evenly. Remember that the material should penetrate through the wire mesh. Plus the stucco should also come from the surface of the old stucco for about ¼ inch. As soon as the layer becomes firm scratch it with a nail. Then let the material cure for at least two days.
Second stucco layer: When you have spent two days for curing dampen the first coat of stucco. The next step is to apply the second layer of the material leaving it for 1/8 inch from the surface. Finally, smooth this layer of stucco once again and leave it for at least two days to cure.
Finishing coat: This is the final step of the repairing process. Here you apply the color coat over the second layer of stucco. First of all, before applying the color coat with a metal float moisten the second layer. Make sure its texture perfectly matches the rest of the house. Eventually, cover the repaired area with plastic and leave it for at least four days to cure completely.
Pay attention to the fact that though repairing large exterior stucco holes takes up over a week to finalize, the exact time spent working is quite minimal. Besides, the job is fairly simple and by following the above-mentioned guidelines of repairing stucco holes, the exterior look of your house will change significantly.
